What Pressure Should Be on the Tyres of the Car?

Tyres pressure is a critical point that should not be neglected for many reasons. One of them is a direct relationship with fuel consumption.

Tyre pressure also tells you how long it should last. How can a lack of pressure or an excess of it affect fuel consumption? And how can a decrease in tyre-on-wheel life be determined? These issues will be covered in this article.

Service life and tyres pressure

It is essential to monitor this indicator. It must comply with the norm that manufacturers indicate on their products – the front side of the protector, the car door pillar, the gas tank cap.

Typically, this information includes a recommendation for the pressure used, the load index, and the protectors’ size. The car owner should be aware that the above indicators are the maximum allowable but not optimal.

Tyre pressure, in most cases, should not exceed 2.5 atmospheres. By controlling this indicator, the driver will ensure his own safety. Exceeding this value will shorten the tread life by 1/5. On the other hand, if the pressure is 4 atmospheres, it is fraught with the explosion of the wheel.

If something like this happens while driving at high speed, it can end up very unpleasant. Furthermore, an inflated tyre significantly increases the car’s braking distance; it will be 11 meters. Also, the performance of the car’s handling will drop sharply.

Do not forget about one more property of the tyre. If it has been operated at low pressure for a long time and then increased, it becomes fraught with an explosion.

Fuel consumption versus tyre pressure

Fuel consumption will increase if the tyre pressure is insufficient. The increase occurs by 2%. It may be difficult for someone to believe it, but if you increase the air pressure in the tread, even if the percentage is relatively small and is about 1.5%.

A tyre inflated at 0.5 atmospheres has a positive effect not only on fuel consumption by a car but such a tread also wears out in the centre.

However, the performance of the vehicle is decreased:

  • during braking, it is more challenging to stay on the verge of “skidding”;
  • the ride is reduced, the driver will feel all road irregularities, the car will shake pretty much throughout the trip.
  • The steering feel will be significantly decreased.

Measuring tyre pressure, how to do it?

To successfully carry out this procedure, you must use a pressure gauge. This device allows you to measure how many kilograms of air are in 1 sq. see tread. This should be done at least once a month. If the car is used quite intensively, then more often.

Ambient temperature will affect tread pressure. A sharp drop in air temperature by 10 C will lead to a decline in tyre pressure. Thus, if frost occurs, and the last pressure measurements were made not so long ago before that, it is advisable to repeat them. In winter, the measurements of this indicator should be increased.

An indicator of a decrease in the pressure in the treads is the “throwing” of the car to the sides while driving.

In addition to the pressure gauge, the measurement can be made with a universal sensor. Therefore, it is much more convenient to use it, especially in the spring and autumn periods, when there is a lot of dirt on the wheels.

When measuring, the indicator cap of the sensor is installed directly on the protector. It is produced with a range from 1.8 to 5 atmospheres. Such a device can be installed on all types of protectors. The type of vehicle often does not matter.

Expert advice

Most people often overlook tyres’ specifications. Ensure you install the corresponding tyres. For example, if you own an SUV, equip your vehicle with the top-rated SUV tyres. Never go cheap on the tyres because they can either save or waste your life.
